Studio Zalktis

I weave stories across history, science, art & myth.

I'm Zintars Beldavs — I build interactive web experiences, films, and animations that connect ideas from far-apart fields into a single thread. This is a living portfolio of recent work.

Current work

The story worlds I'm building now, and the two most recent finished ones.

Māra un Māris uz Marsa — a Mars beginning to bloom

Illustrated novel, in print and on screen · 2026 Future Vision XPRIZE entry

Māra un Māris uz Marsa

A distinctly Latvian vision of a world made livable.

My father's 1978 Latvian science-fiction novel, rebuilt as a fully illustrated bilingual edition with a cinematic trailer, its own music, and the world of the book — now heading for print, and for the screen.

The Weave

For the last as fast as the first.

A century after scarcity ends, one valley still says no — and an intelligence that could end every problem in a night chooses instead to wait at the door. Explore the world, the people, and the songs.

New film · 7 minutes · A fable of artificial minds

Heartwood

The voice was in the wood before the knife.

Collaboration

Work made with other artists — their art, this studio's machinery.

Some Soup at Le Café Diablo — the café staff step out of their comic panels

New film · with William A. Williams III · dark comedy

Some Soup at Le Café Diablo

No characters were harmed. Several were simmered.

Bill — digital artist, character designer, and old friend from the band days — draws the diner comic Le Café Diablo. In the film his hand-drawn staff climb out of their panels and act out a full episode: every line his, every page animated from the drawings themselves. And the comic is also a walkable 3D café — the strip pages hang on the walls and act themselves out when you click them, specials on the board, a sentient coffee cup on the counter, a door through to the Zin-Art museum next door. Built here at the studio; all art is his.

Heritage

Three works that run back to the same place — my own fieldwork, my mother's scholarship, and the instruments themselves.

Atgriešanās — a benthic transect chart hand-plotted on graph paper in 1996, recovered from inside the original thesis document

Hypertext edition · Original research

Atgriešanās — The Return

My own thesis, published whole for the first time: ten chapters on public participation in environmental policy, built from a reef in Fiji, a river mouth in Belize and a survey of 260 people in Latvia. The figures were recovered from inside the original 2005 document, the charts redrawn from the 1994 field data — and a second half returns to all three places thirty years on.

Aija Veldre Beldavs in Latvian folk dress, head bowed over her reading

Hypertext edition · Folklore scholarship

Aija Veldre Beldavs — the dissertation

My mother's doctoral work on apdziedāšanās, Latvian ritual insult song-warring, rebuilt as one continuous annotated hypertext — hover glossary, cross-references, and an interactive map of its concepts.

Spēlmaņi — playable Latvian folk instruments: a 12-string kokle rendered in warm wood

Playable instruments · Latviski & English

Spēlmaņi

Four Latvian folk instruments — kokle, stabule, dūdas, vijole — playable in your browser, with a learn mode that teaches real folk songs note by note, every melody traced to verified notation and its original singer.

Art, music & play

Things to open and poke at — a museum of my drawings, a maze to run, and a tool for deciding whether to go skiing. All in the browser, right now.

Eye Over the Sea — a drawn eye and lips on a stalk over an ocean sunset photograph, from the Zin-Art museum

Virtual gallery · 512 drawings

Zin-Art — The Drawn Museum

A first-person museum of 512 of my digital drawings, curated into themed halls beneath skies photographed on my travels — with Latvian ornament woven throughout. Walk it like a game; every work has its own wall label. The soundtrack is Voiceks Voiska — the first Latvian ska band, which I played in while on a Fulbright in Latvia — spinning a different song from our album «Konvojs» in every hall.

ZALKRUN — a neon blue corridor seen through glowing yellow jaws, a woven Latvian ornament band running along the walls

Browser game · Three cameras

Zalkrun

The 1980 maze chase rebuilt in 3D — and you are inside the yellow one's head, its jaws opening and closing around your view as you run. One keypress swaps between first person, a chase camera above the walls, and the flat overhead board of the original. It is dressed in Latvian folklore: a woven belt of Auseklis and Jumis signs runs the walls, the dots are milk set out for the grass snake that guards the house, and the four hunters are Vilkacis, Ragana, Lietuvēns and Velns — keeping, underneath, the exact century-old chase logic of the arcade original.

Snowline — a dark map of the Pacific Northwest scattered with markers for ski areas, mountain passes and road cameras

Ski conditions · 52 areas · live data

Snowline

I ski, and I got tired of opening four tabs to answer one question: is tomorrow worth the drive. A snow report, a forecast, an avalanche bulletin and a road map — none of which reference each other. So this joins them. For 52 ski areas across Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah and British Columbia it shows the snow that actually fell, the snow that's coming, the avalanche danger for the zone the mountain sits in, and whether the pass between you and it is open — plus 128 live road cameras on a map. Built for myself; you're welcome to it, but check the real sources before you drive.

Films

Short pieces and experiments — a selection from 157 videos made over the last few years.

About Studio Zalktis

The zalktis — the grass snake — is an ancient Latvian symbol of wisdom, protection, and the thread that connects the worlds. I weave ideas from history, science, art, and myth to create new experiences that honor the old.

I work across interactive web, film, and animation. Some pieces are large and cinematic; some are quiet experiments. They share a belief that the best way to understand the future is to tell its story well.
